Hello, friend! Hope you’ve had a fantastic week and managed to treat yourself to something nice. You’ve earned it!
Fishbird Catch of the Week
We post twice a week (Wednesday & Saturday) on the Fishbird Central blog. This week’s catch included:
We’ve chosen 9 books to read in June. One of which will be the first book in our Fishbird Central Book Club : “You Like it Darker”by Stephen King ! Woot woot! There are no ‘hidden costs’ or ‘elite special status’ that you need to join our book club. Just pick up a copy of the book, give it a crack & let us know what you think!
We visit 10 of Australia’s Big Things and suggest 5 more that should probably be on the list! So many more to visit in Oz. Disclaimer - I may have altered the backstory of each ‘Big Thing’ for humorous purposes. You’re welcome, culture.
Diary of a Bird Bothering Coffee Thief
Until I’ve had my morning coffee, I operate on autopilot. This week, the unthinkable happened and I had a mild misunderstanding with the coffee man and walked away sipping on a strangers too-sweet large flat white.
Normally, I have no sugar in my coffee like a sad grown up. There was a time in the not-too-distant past where I had 5 sugars in my coffee. Life was sweet.
The very morning that I became a criminal, I was deciding on whether or not to try another sugar-free challenge. However, I’ve now chosen to interpret this tasty mis-sip as proof that the aliens want me to keep eating sugar. Nay - they demand it. I tried to cut sugar out completely, but who am I to haggle with a spaceman. I don’t even know how the toaster works.
I played an unexpected game of hide-and-snoop with some gardeners who were cutting down trees in my yard this week.
We had a few awkward moments when (still in my business pyjamas) I’d close the blinds while looking them in the eye, then peak around the curtain to see if they were still there. They always were. We did this a few times.
I rent, so its not surprising they didn’t tell me the trees were going, but I did find it sad to say goodbye to my work-from-home colleagues - Beaky Petersen & Fluff-Face McCaw (two noisy minors).
Silver lining is, now I can snoop more easily on people walking from my street to the shops - and I’ve replaced my view of noisy minors with slightly further away lorikeets.
Quick Fire Wrap Up
Reading: ‘The Hotel Witch’ by Jessica Miller. This book is on my radar as it was nominated for Best Children’s Fiction in the 2023 Aurealis Awards.
Watching: Just finished Season 1 of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ - Martin Short is a hoot! Also working my way through ‘Ripley’ with the amazing Andrew Scott.
Wondering: What do ‘sleep pants’ become when you’re not sleeping? They’re not ‘outside pants’ or ‘house pants’ … what’s the pants version of brunch?
Wishes for the Week
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, friend!
Let me know how you deal with socially awkward encounters. Do you replay conversations in your head most of the day, running through scenarios where you could have been a normal human instead? No, neither do I.
My goals for the coming week include catching up with some friends over a sensible amount (a chortle?) of margaritas; make some art (I didn’t get around to sketching this week & it’s bugging me); and make a tower of all the books I own to see if I can submit it for the ‘Big Things’ list.
Stay cool, punks.
‘There are chickens in the trees’ - Stephen King (probably)
