06. Penguin Crimes in Sheepish Times
Staring Inspector Flippers 'Flip' McMystery in "Ewe've been fleeced!"
Hello, friend! Have you had a good week? I’ve heard from 3 reliable sources that you tried your best. Nicely done! We all bring something different to the world around us, and frankly - you bring the jazz. And jazz is cool. Therefore - you are cool & the world is lucky to have you. Math.
Fishbird Catch of the Week
We post twice a week (Wednesday & Saturday) on the Fishbird Central blog. This week’s catch included:
The Sheep’s Back Museum - Naracoorte, SA
In March this year, we stayed a few nights in the small town of Naracoorte South Australia. While there, we stumbled across The Sheep’s Back Museum! What a hoot! I loooove when historical displays and museums have mannequins and shady looking fake sheep dogs. As an added plus, all the volunteers were sweet and didn’t kick us out for giggling at the wool machines! Totally worth a visit!

Because I’ve only got 5645 projects on the go at the moment, I thought now’s the time to read all of the Penguin Crime Classics! Of the first 1000 Penguin books in the main series - the green crime fiction titles make up about 280! Should only take me 800 years. Some titles will be hard to find, but I’ll keep my eye out in second-hand bookshops. If it means I have to go into every bookshop in Australia, that’s a cross I’m happy to bear.
Crossing the Streams - Penguin Crime Noir & Bad N’Ewes
I think we need a story about a penguin detective solving a woolly mystery in honour of my 2 posts this week. I’ve drafted the back blurb first - as surely, this is how most books are written …
Join Inspector Flippers 'Flip' McMystery on his first crime solving adventure - "Ewe've been fleeced!"
In the fog-drenched alleys of Glacier Bay, bad n'ewes shakes the heart of the wool industry. When prominent wool merchant, Woolford Baa-rlowe, is found dead and his priceless fleece collection missing, Inspector Flippers 'Flip' McMystery, a penguin with a beak for trouble, dives into a tangled shoal of deception, betrayal, and cold-blooded murder.
With suspects as slippery as ice and clues as thin as a tired tuxedo, Flip faces his toughest case yet. As the stakes rise, he calls on his old friend and mentor, Bective the Beef Detective, to lend a hoof in unraveling the truth. Together, they must navigate a treacherous path where trust is scarce and danger looms behind every corner.
"Ewe've Been Fleeced!" is a gripping noir tale of grit, wits, and an unrelenting quest for justice. Will Flip have the wool pulled over his eyes? Will Bective meat a choppy end? Who will find justice for Woolfrod Baa-rlow! Only crime will tell.
Quick Fire Wrap Up
Currently Reading: ‘The Last Murder at the End of the World’ by Stuart Turton (Amazon affiliate link). I’ve loved 2 other books by Turton & hope this will be a hat-trick.
Currently Watching: In one of the latest Dr Who episodes, we were introduced to a mysterious bounty hunter called Rogue - played by Jonathan Groff. This sent me down a Broadway rabbit hole as Groff currently stars in the musical ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ with Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez. I wish they were playing in Oz so I could seem them live … *manifests Broadway in Australia*.
Currently Wondering: If heaven is a construct and we all create our own safe places filled with our loved ones in the afterlife - are there pockets of weird mash-up heavens on the border of where your version bleeds into your neighbours? Who cleans that up?
Wishes for the Week
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, friend!
There are a lot of books out there to read, a lot of TV shows and movies to watch, and a lot of life to be living in the gaps. Write your own story, and make it a kind one.
Stay cool, punks.
