Hello, friend! Hope you’ve had a great week! I stumbled across a fact on the Internet yesterday that said - ‘The first animals to travel to outer space were fruit flies’.
As I read it on the Internet, we can take it as 100% true with no further research required. Also, it proves that we don’t need math and can do pretty much anything we set our minds to. Unless you’re going to let a fruit fly (basically a tiny chicken) beat you? No? Didn’t think so.
Next stop - space.
Fishbird Catch of the Week
We post twice a week on Fishbird Central. This week’s catch included:
2024 Edgar Allan Poe Award Winners!
There are SO many books out there to read, how do you know which one will be good? You go straight to the award winners! We’ve read quite a few on this list now, and can vouch for their page-turniness and gasp-osity (actual words, don’t check). There are links in this post to the initial full nominee list too - so plenty to add to your TBR!

Penguin Modern Classics - Crime & Espionage
I’m officially obsessed with Penguin Crime classics at the moment. Thankfully, the Penguin wizards are rebooting their line of green-themed crime and espionage titles and we can buy ALL of them in fancy new covers! ALL OF THEM! There are 30 at the moment, and you’d better believe that they’re all coming home with me. Side note to ‘Head Penguin’ - if you’re reading this, I’d love a gift pack *wink wink*.

On the Facebook - Hip, Hop and Happening
Have you heard of Facebook? I’m not sure if it will catch on, but I’ve set up a Fishbird Central Facebook page this week, just in case. Come over and say ‘Hi!’ - I’ll put the kettle on. I assume that’s what Facebook’s for.
Face:
For those that are new to my face, below is a pictograph of times I smiled awkwardly with animals and/or was being mysterious.
Book:
“What are 7 of the books or authors that have shaped your love of reading?” Thanks for asking that numerically specific question! In no particular order and with some tasty Amazon Affiliate links:
Stephen King will generally take top billing for my favourite author. The ‘Dark Tower Series’, ‘IT’ and ‘The Talisman’ are my go-to titles.
The ‘Little House on the Prairie’ books speak to the love I have of homesteading and frontier life (for some reason). This series lives in my bones.
Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels are all a hoot - Death is one of my fave characters & I love the ‘Tiffany Aching’ books.
Douglas Adams & ‘The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’ series - genius. Always pack a towel when you travel. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Poirot represents my core love of detective/crime/mystery fiction - also David Suchet is the best Poirot.
Neil Gaiman always packs a punch with his dark whimsy. Love the ‘Sandman’ universe and the large majority of his novels.
David Eddings & ‘The Belgariad’ series - my first foray into fantasy, and it will always hold a nostalgic and special place in my heart.

Quick Fire Wrap Up
Currently Reading: ‘The River We Remember’ by William Kent Kruger (Amazon affiliate link). Nominated for ‘Best Novel’ in the 2024 Edgar Awards, this book is about a small Minnesota town in 1958, rocked by the murder of its most powerful citizen.
Currently Watching: ‘The Dry’ starring Eric Bana. This is a 2020 movie, based off the best-selling novel by Jane Harper - which was a 4-star read for me. Trying to get back into watching movies!
Currently Wondering: If I need to do a big Bunnings trip to restock all my outside plants, or if the ghosts of the old plants will turn any new plants against me and it will trigger some kind of dystopian event.
Wishes for the Week
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, friend!
The only thing standing between you and greatness is that fruit fly that went to space. Be more fruit fly.
Stay cool, punks.
“There is no ‘final frontier’ only a frontier that has less flies.” - William Shatner (probably)
