Hello, friend! Hope you’ve had a great week!
I’ve been acting temporary head chef to a toothless cat for the last few days - getting paid in purrs, suspicious side-eye pats and the odd poo to scoop up. I could do without the poo.
I’m sure the cat in question wonders why I’m suddenly there, and why I persist in waving a ‘licky-lick’ cat treat in front of her, even though she’s been very clear that she will not, nor will she ever, partake of smooshed chicken in a tube. Fair enough too.
Here’s us being best friends.
Fishbird Catch of the Week
We post twice a week on Fishbird Central. This week’s catch included:
Backs on the Cover!
Let’s fill a reading challenge prompt - 3 books with people’s backs on the cover! It’s time to discover why old Background Bill is so mysterious with his back to us on so many book covers! Turn around, bright eyes - it’s time to read your secrets! In this post we’ll review ‘Darkness for Light’ by Emma Viskic; ‘Down the River Unto the Sea’ by Walter Mosley & ‘Five Decembers’ by James Kestrel.

Amble at Hahndorf!
In March this year, we were lucky enough to be road-tripping around the Australian states and stopped in to the Adelaide Hills for a few nights. What a beautiful spot! We stayed in Hahndorf, learned a little bit of its history, pointed at a LOT of birds, ate schnitzels the size of our heads and snooped in some bookshops.

Love Your Book Shop Day!
Love Your Book Shop Day will be upon us next weekend - Saturday 12 October! … *swoons into the arms of an open book*. It’s time to prepare your book shopping legs!
For all book lovers, this is your chance to go absolutely nuts and hit every book shop in your vicinity - and beyond! Share the book buying love amongst as many independent book shops as you can!
There are sooooo many book shops to visit - so how do you choose?! Some local book shops that are always on my book-crawl radar are:
But what books do you choose when you get INTO a bookshop?! Any bookseller worth their salt, will fall over themselves to help you choose your next favourite read - so don’t be afraid to ask for help!
You can also pop over to the ‘Bookish Bites’ section of Fishbird Central for book reviews, reading challenges and recommendations. Our Goodreads also has over 1,300 read books - and over 790 books on our want-to-read list!
Some 5 star reads that I’ve enjoyed this year include:

Quick Fire Wrap Up
Currently Reading: ‘Notes on an Execution’ by Danya Kukafka. This is a story about Ansel Packer, who is scheduled to die in 12 hours. Ansel doesn't want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood. Yet now he awaits the same fate he forced on those girls, years ago. This is the story of the women who survive. As the clock ticks down, 3 women - a mother, a sister, a detective - reckon with the choices that culminate in tragedy, the impact on those in its wake, and the possibility of redemption.
Currently Watching: Lately I’ve been overwhelmed with the choice of what to watch, so default back to catching up on YouTube. Some of my favourite comfort-watch creators at the moment are Gavin Reads It All, Mark Ferris and Destiny Sidwell.
Currently Wondering: How many books I can practically buy for Love Your Book Shop Day, without having to sell bookmarks on the dark web to fund my addiction.
Wishes for the Week
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, friend!
Celebrate the reader in your life this weekend, and spread some love on Saturday 12 October. If you’re the book lover in your life, then we 1000% support your book buying and will fight anyone who says you already have too many books.
