Hello, friend! Hope you’ve had a good week, and - if you’re in Australia - are having a lovely long Australia Day weekend with friends and family.
Perhaps you’re firing up the BBQ and debating with your neighbours about the origins of the humble lamington or pavlova. Keep it cool, fools. Friends don’t let friends waste sweet treats. Just make a giant Lampavington and call it square.
Fishbird Catch of the Week
We post twice a week on Fishbird Central. This week’s catch included:
Easy as One, Two, Three!
In this post we review 3 books with numbers in the title! From the sinister surveillance vibes of Alyssa Cole’s When No One is Watching to the gritty, action-packed ride of James Lee Burke’s Two for Texas, and the delightfully clever whodunit in Katy Watson’s The Three Dahlias - this trio is anything but paint-by-numbers. What’s your favourite book with a number in the title?

Daily Art - January 2025, Week 2!
In this post we continue our commitment to create crazy creatures! We’ll introduce you to the Beef Busters, Thompson Cassowary, Rufus Ruffington, Meerkat Merle, The Silly Sausages, Pigswilliam the 3rd and Valerie Boxer! All have their own backstories and are clamouring for their tales to be penned some day soon. Let us know which story arc takes your fancy!

A Home Amongst the Gum Trees …
The Fishbird Fam are in the very early stages of buying our first home.
Turns out there are a lot of steps to go through before you can even get near an actual set of steps leading to a front door that a human can own.
You need to “work out a budget”, “explain why you seem to live at Muffin Break” (our weekend coffee) and “pretend that you know what an offset is” amongst a million other things.
If you’ve recently bought a home, we’d love it if you shared some of your ‘top tips’ with us in the comments.
Do you wish you kicked the tyres before signing the contract? Were there ghosts in the laundry that you had to deal with on your first night? How many hidden costs were you not aware of (not counting the number of burrito bowls you had to eat for money-math energy)?
We’ll keep you in the loop as our overwhelm battles with excitement.
Quick Fire Wrap Up
Currently Reading: “The Reunion” by Bronwyn Rivers (NetGalley ARC). Five old school friends reunite at an isolated farm in the bush. They've barely seen each other since they were teenagers, but perhaps reconnecting is what they all need - an opportunity to move on from Ed's death. As temperatures and tensions rise, they realise the danger they're in. With their survival at stake, the group must decide whether they're willing to confront the past and the secrets they swore to keep.
Currently Watching: “Ghosts” Season One (UK Comedy Version). A cash-strapped young couple inherit a grand country house, only to find it is both falling apart and teeming with the ghosts of former inhabitants.
Currently Wondering: If a kookaburra will steal anyones sausages today.
Wishes for the Week
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead, friend.
If you’re also pretending to be an adult, and working out how to make some life goals happen - we’re cheering for you. Put on your bravest pants (the ones with the deepest pockets), tilt your chin towards the sun & shout your favourite war-cry - “We are cool, caffeinated and creative!”.
You’ve got this.
Stay cool, punks x
